Hatchet is about a young boy named Victor Crowley whom was born terribly disfigured. Victor is often teased and taunted by children because of his bizarre, disfiguring birth defect. One Halloween night a group of kids try to scare him out of his house with firecrackers and accidentally start a fire, trapping poor Victor inside. His father, (played by Friday the 13th's Kane Hodder), arrives home and attempts to save him by chopping the door down, not knowing that Victor is wedged on the other side of the door!! Soon after, people start disappearing, and the legend of Victor Crowley is born. The legend says that Victor greets anyone that trespasses, in the swampy waters that he calls home, with a sharp and bloody hatchet! Of course this is a horror film, so a group of tourist go on a boat ride out into the swamps and are hunted by the murderous Victor Crowley. You had to know that was coming?
This film is nothing more than "Good Old fashioned horror at it's finest!" It is very reminiscent of Friday the 13th, but not in the way of being some cheap, insulting rip-off. No, Victor Crowley ranks up there with Jason, Freddy, & Leather Face, proving that he can definitely hold his own! This film has everything, it has tons of blood and gore, and kills that are very inventive, as well as Robert Englund as a backwoods hillbilly, it doesn't get any better than that! I've seen plenty of modern-day horror films that attempt to take you back to the all-great horror classics, only to disappoint, but this is definitely NOT one of them! The storyline itself keeps you interested throughout the film, making you want more and more! The ending is somewhat abrupt, which I usually hate with a passion, but it suits the storyline of this film. I rank this film a 4.5 out of 5 stars. It is on my list of favorite films and I can only hope that the sequel that is in "talks" can actually become reality and be as good, if not better, than the original!
